OceanDocs
Rodrigues, K.A..
The reproductive biology of Ramnogaster arcuata inhabiting waters of the Rio de la Plata estuary (Argentina - Uruguay) was studied by using macroscopic and histological analysis of ovaries. R. Arcuata specimens were collected from two research cruises of the National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) carried out in June 1998 and June 1999. During these surveys, bottom salinity and temperature data were also registered. In addition, information about annual catches of this species in the Rio de la Plata, obtained from different INIDEP cruises performed during the last ten years, was analyzed. During winter, a prevalence of R. arcuata individuals was observed in the Rio de la Plata estuary. In summer, this species apparently moves...

Ba, I.S..

Competition between the sibling species <i>Tisbe holothuriae</i> and <i>T. battagliai</i> (Harpacticoida) OMA
Bergmans, M.; Janssens, P.P.M..
The influence of the salinity on the performance of the sibling species <i>Tisbe holothuriae</i> and <i>T. battagliai</i> in pure and mixed cultures was studied, using laboratory stocks adapted to 32 pro mille for over 175 generations. Cohort studies show that <i>T. holothuriae</i> has higher growth rates (R0 and r) at 32 pro mille, <i>T. battagliai</i> at 20 pro mille. The latter's life cycle is much less affected by the difference in salinity. 'De Wit' replacement series were used to study competitive interactions. Without water renewal, <i>T. holothuriae</i> eliminates its sibling species in less than 2 generations, apparently through chemical interference. With water...

ArchiMer
Le Foll, Anne.
The study of the crab Cancer pagurus , along the Brittany coast, has revealed new information about its movements, growth and reproduction. The 1439 crab tagging has been effected either on land using the Edwards technique "suture-tag" or onboard using a similar technique to the Gundersen method of "toggle-tag". The results confirm that males are relatively sedentary, the females migrate more. To estimate growth, the author used the "capture-recapture" method and the results from crab rearing. It appeared that the molt increment is not constant and generally, so the molt frequency, it percentage decreases when the size increases.

Cycle ovarien du merlu, Merluccius merluccius , poisson a ponte fractionnee. ArchiMer
Sarano, F.
The present work analyses and describes Merluccius merluccius ovarian cycle in the Bay of Biscay as an example of partial spawner. Three methods were employed: a macroscopic examination of about 10,000 ovaries -- a cytologic and histologic study -- an investigation of the size structure of the oocytes population of 63 ovaries. The author developed an original mathematical method for serial spawning demonstration. He demonstrates that hake is a partial spawner: a female usually rapidly spawns 4 or 5 times without ovaries rest. On this basis, he gives a new reference scale of the maturity stages of the ovarian cycle: after developing (II), ripe (III), running (IV), the partly spent ovary is named (II+); the repetitive sequence III-IV-II + characterize serial...

Evolution and development: some insights from evolutionary theory Anais da ABC (AABC)
DAVID,JEAN R..
Developmental biology and evolutionary biology are both mature integrative disciplines which started in the 19th century and then followed parallel and independent scientific pathways. Recently, a genetical component has stepped into both disciplines (developmental genetics and evolutionary genetics) pointing out the need for future convergent maturation. Indeed, the Evo-Devo approach is becoming popular among developmental biologists, based on the facts that distant groups share a common ancestry, that precise phylogenies can be worked out and that homologous genes often play similar roles during the development of very different organisms. In this essay, I try to show that the real future of Evo-Devo thinking is still broader. The evolutionary theory is...

Morizur, Yvon; Conan, Gérard; Guenole, A.; Omnes, Marie-helene.
Females of the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus (L.) incubate their eggs under the abdomen for a period of several months. The authors estimated the individual fecundity of N. norvegicus (1) before spawning, and (2) at the end of the incubation period. From these two relationships, they then calculated the average egg loss. Egg loss seems to be relatively higher for small females than for large ones. The mean egg loss estimated for the Bay of Biscay (45%) differs from the only other existing value (75%) calculated by other authors for Portuguese waters. Egg loss may regulate stock-density, and may be a mechanism intervening in stock-recruitment.

Impact of the reproduction dynamics on genetic variation in the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis ArchiMer
Lapegue, Sylvie; Taris, Nicolas; Lallias, Delphine; Bonhomme, Francois; Boudry, Pierre.
The European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) is a marine bivalve whose natural geographical distribution ranges along the European Atlantic coast from Norway to Morocco, in addition to the Mediterranean and Black Sea. The latest results obtained on the genetic differentiation between these populations have led us to pursue studies at a finer scale, in order to estimate the effective number of breeders and the temporal dynamics of reproduction and, more specially, recruitment. Several experiments were performed to document (1) the variance in allele frequencies during a natural settlement period; (2) the paternal contribution to fertilization by analyzing larvae sampled at the brooding stage within individual females; (3) the variance of individual...

Induction of ovulation and stimulation of spermation by LHRH or an LHRH analog associated or not with pimozide. Effects on some teleost fish. ArchiMer
Billard, R; Weil, C; Barnabe, G.
Effectiveness of LHRH and one of its analogs (LHRH-A = D-Ala super(6) ethylamide) on induction of ovulation and stimulation of spermiation is reviewed here. LHRH was also combined with pimozide, an anti-dopaminergic agent, to try to cancel dopamine inhibition of gonatotropin (GtH) release. LHRH-A alone (50 mu g/kg) did not initiate ovulation but only oocyte maturation. When pimozide (10 mg/kg) and LHRH-A (50 mu g/kg) were combined, gonadotropic hormone secretion was significantly increased, causing ovulation and stimulating spermiation. This combination advanced ovulation in trout. Trout egg quality was markedly altered by the pimozide treatment; it remains to be tested in carp. In sea bass, LHRH-A was much more effective than LHRH, and ovulation was...

Vanherp, F.
Particular attention is given to the crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH), to the gonad inhibiting (GIH) and stimulating hormone (GSH), to the moult inhibiting hormone (MIH) and to the peptidergic factors related to some hormones from vertebrates and insects. The interactions of these factors as well as the coordination with biogenic amines and steroids in the control of the metabolism, reproduction and moulting are postulated.

La vitellogenese chez Patella coeruelae LMK (Mollusca, Gasteropoda). Approche ultrastructurale ArchiMer
Benmeradi, N.
During the reproductive period, the microscopical observation of Patella coerulea ovary shows some ovogonies forming neets, supported by a conjonctive network, previtellogenic oocytes which leave gradually the conjonctive tissue and vitellogenic oocytes isolated in the acinus lumen. In early stages of previtellogenesis, an important nucleolar activity, caracterised by cloud-shaped or nematosomes and ribonucleoproteinic extrusions in cytoplasm compartment can be observed. At the end of this stage, the oocyte becomes richer in organites, mitochondria, granular endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi. We further notice the outcome of the first vitellin platelets. Production of vitellus is higher as three kinds of vitellus are observed in the following order: dark...

This influence of salt media on different aspects of biological cycle and on most common pathogenic agents of Turkish freshwater crayfish Astacus leptodactylus is investigated survival and growing of juveniles O super(+) and intermediary individuals 1 super(+) are also studied. Total osmotic metabolism and reproduction, have been recorded. It appears that youngest individuals are particularly sensitive to low salinities (7 ppt.). Intermediary ones are more resistant nevertheless salinity does not improve neither survival nor growing. Copulation, laying and pleopod egg fixation are particularly affected by salt waters. The only promising application of salinity parameter on astaciculture could be whether prophylactic or curative treatment with concentrated...
